A
guide dog trainer is a person that trains guide dogs. Guide dogs
help people that are blind to accomplish various tasks. A guide
dog is an extremely intelligent and well-trained dog. It really
takes a special dog to be a guide dog. Guide dogs are important
to people who cannot see because they use their own eyes to guide
them. Instead of having a person to take their hand and show them
the way, a blind person would take the leash and be guided by the
dog.
Guide
dog trainers know the importance of their job. The trainers are
aware that someone who cannot see is depending on them to train
their guide dog successfully and thoroughly. Making sure that each
dog, they train is capable of helping someone who cannot see to
cross the road. This would require a dog to look both ways down
the street, and be aware of any oncoming traffic and when it is
safe to cross.
Sometimes
guide dog trainers may be a little overwhelmed with all of the responsibility
riding on their shoulders to produce a well-trained dog. By training
a dog that is any less than perfect, they may put someone’s
life at risk. Training a guide dog takes a lot of time, and patience.
These trainers spend weeks at a time if not more on training a guide
dog.
Guide
dog trainers also train guide dogs to do more than help someone
blind cross the street. They are able to retrieve things for them,
and help them do little tasks around the house. Most guide dogs
are trained to the specifics that a certain person needs. Meaning
that the trainers at times may have to get a little creative while
training.
Guide
dog trainers are wonderful people doing a great service for those
who cannot see. The guide dogs that are being trained, and can perform
accurately are as well. Wether you are a guide dog trainer, or a
guide dog, your job is highly looked upon with a lot of respect
from many people blind and not.
